The Book

Barbara Hammer is an film maker known for exploring female sexuality and everyday struggles for woman such as gender roles, lesbian relationships and coping with ageing and family. In addition to that, she is also a performance artist, makes installations and photographs, collages and drawings. Therefor, she was inspired to document her own personal life and since she identified as lesbian this was naturally part of her life. In 1974 she filmed Dyketactics, widely considered to be one of the first lesbian films.
After this, she never strayed from the topic and included it in all of her works to come. The format didn't much matter.
So, in all of these different expressions feminism and woman are the centre of her story's.

The Process

In Truant Photographs, 1970-1979 her photographic images taken between 1970 and 1979 come together. These images explore female sexuality and she seeks to deconstruct the narratives that oppress woman in general but more specifically lesbians.

I was asked by capricious Publishing and studio Lin to do the reproduction of the images in duotone. Meaning we printed in two tones, in this case two blacks. There are also a couple of CMYK prints in there but most of them are in duotone. Scans of the images were made available to me and I could start working on the reproduction. After initial test printing we discovered we had to make some adjustments to improve the contrast and so we did. In order to make sure I got it right the publisher came over to work with me on the press checks. It was an educational process for me!
