The Book

This book has been published on the occasion of the new Museum exhibition "Ellen Gallagher: Don't Axe Me," curated by Gary Carrion-Murayari.
"Don't Axe Me" brings together over twenty years of work by the American artist Ellen Gallagher in the book for Tate and the book for New Museum contains her newer work. During this time, Gallagher has worked across a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, printmaking and film with a formal inventiveness and a critical acuity that has made her one of the most respected artists of her generation. (from the Directors foreword).

The Process

The process of Don't Axe Me was quite intense. Ellen was still finishing up some of the paintings when I was already busy preparing and reproducing the images the photographer, I hired for this occasion, took. The book is quite unique with holes in most pages and interesting foils over pages. On top of that I had to make sure the colours where just as vibrant on paper as they were in the paintings. In addition, the feeling of a painting shouldn't be lost when it became a book.

On top of that during the process of making this catalogues for New Museum, Ellen asked me if I was also able to help her out with the catalogues for Tate which was a collection of her work over the past 20 years. Of course I said yes, and we ended up with two beautiful books exploring her work. It was a pleasure to work with her on these books!
