The Book

This book relates of the use of arsenic as a stimulus by people living in the high Alps, back in the old days. The story is told in two ways. One fictional that tempts us to believe this could still be common, yet illegal, practise today and a second way that is more factional. In the fictional section you'll find photographs by Simon combined with historical footage. The more factional part of the book contains research, articles and other images that already existed and give a background to the book. It also helps explain how the book came about.

The Process

For the Arsenic Eaters my job was to make the images match with each other and dissolve the differences in atmosphere. That was the only way this story could be told convincingly. The difficulty in bringing images together is trying not to loose the original vibe of the image and intention of the photographer. In reproduction this is always the goal but usually I don't make drastic differences to these images. However in trying to bring these atmospheres together I had to make some bigger changes. In the end I had a satisfied artist and a beautiful book with a unique story.
