The Book

Salters Cottages by Garry Schneider consists of stills from a film Gary made at Salters Cottages, a cottage community on Long Island, New York in 1981. The film is an homage to Jean Genet’s film ‘Un Chant d’Amour (1950). The film features, amongst others, photographer Peter Hujar.

Gary Schneider used to print Hujar’s professional prints. From being a photography printer Schneider developed his own artistic career.

The book was presented at the Paris Jeu the Paume museum at the occasion of an overview show of Hujar’s work, where the film was also screened.

The Process

Working with a print professional like Gary Schneider was to me, a chance to learn from another’s professional trained eye. It challenged me to further refine my own understanding of reproduction of tonal scales. Working in a quad tone technique provided me with the tools to make reproductions in offset to perfection.

Reproducing these images was not easy. They consist mostly of mid tones, since the contrast is soft. And there is a lot of important stuff happening in the darker tones. of course, printing on a rough uncoated paper, even a paper as beautiful as this Munken Kristall Rough, brings an extra challenge to this.

I promised Gary that I would give him te perfect result he was dreaming of but feared not to get. Our mutual joy was great when we met on press and saw that I kept my promise. Often I am slightly underwhelmed by the result of my work when I finally get to see the finished boks. Mostly because I realise that I could've done better. Not with this book. I experience great joy whenever I go through it.
